MEDIA BIAS BY DEMAND
In these days when allegations of media bias are so common, it is easy
to forget a time when people read newspapers because of their bias.
Colonel Robert R. McCormick's Chicago Tribune is a case in point.
McCormick, whom his critics dubbed the greatest mind of the fourteenth
century, made no visible effort to restrict his opinions to the
editorial page. Suspicious of anything east of Gary, Indiana, the
Colonel reserved a special hatred for New York and its inhabitants.
"Tom Dewey is not an American," McCormick grumbled in 1944. "He's a New
Yorker."
