BURGLAR SURPRISED BY DEN OF BLACKBELTS - Barbara McLintock
Victoria B.C. - Victoria Police were summoned to a building on the north
side of downtown about 7 pm on Monday by a 911 caller, saying an
apparent burglar was being held down by a number of citizens.
When officers arrived, the citizens were pleased to turn the man over to
them - and to explain how easy it had been for them to catch him. The
vacant-looking office building in the dark industrial area was home to a
karate club.
"It looked like the guy had cased out the building pretty carefully,"
said police Sergeant Doug Bond. But when the burglar arrived, there was
a practice underway that included several black belts. They heard the
noise of glass breaking below them and ran downstairs.
When the burglar realized who had caught him, he did not offer any
resistance.
"You could say it just wasn't his lucky day," said Sgt. Bond.
The 40-year-old man, well-known to police officers, will be facing
break-and-enter charges.
